Community Development
is responsible for the City of Beaumont's revitalization program. The
construction of new affordable houses, the provision of first home
buyers assistance and the rehabilitation of older homes, are activities
which help expand the City's residential tax base. The objective is to
develop viable urban communities and improve economic opportunities,
principally for persons of low and moderate income.
The City of Beaumont
was selected by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to
be a recipient of the John J. Gunther Blue Ribbon Practices in Community
Development Awards. John J. Gunther was an instrumental character in the
history of housing and community development in this country. He was
also a major influence in the creation of HUD. It is in his honor that
HUD recognizes the most notable and innovative practices in community
development. The Blue Ribbon Practices are selected by HUD's Field
Offices as part of an annual review of all community development grant
recipients.
